Caring for old wood
These pieces have already lasted a lifetime. A little care keeps them going for another.
Dust gently
A soft, dry cloth, with the grain. A barely damp one for sticky spots, dried right after.
Mind the sun and the heat
Hard afternoon sun fades and dries old finishes. Keep pieces a little away from radiators, vents and fireplaces.
Coasters, always
Water rings and hot mugs are how half our pieces ended up in antique malls.
Wax, not spray
A coat of good paste wax once or twice a year. Skip silicone sprays and oily polishes; they cloud the finish and make the next restoration harder.
Lift, don't drag
Carry by the case, not the top or the arms. Take drawers and marble tops out before moving.
Let it breathe
Wood moves with the seasons. Steady humidity keeps joints tight and veneer flat.
